Roaming

ROAMING WITH YOUR CELLULAR

What is Roaming?

When you place or receive cell phone calls outside your Home System (Kenora) you are roaming with your cellular service.

Roaming in Canada

With KMTS Mobility, your phone works in Canada on the B-side wireless company networks. Usually 7-digit dialing can be used when making local calls, but in some areas, 10-digit dialing (area code plus phone number) is required when making local calls.

When roaming in Canada near the U.S. border, you may be picked up by a U.S. cellsite. If you want to be certain before making or receiving calls, dial [*]611 for Customer Service to determine if you are accessing a Canadian or U.S. service carrier. Please be aware, if you access a U.S. carrier, applicable U.S. charges and long distance will apply.

In some areas in Canada, you do not always have to dial 1 before the area code and number to place a long distance call. This means that in some cases, you may think you are placing a local call that is actually long distance. Long distance charges will apply.

Making Local Calls while you’re out of Kenora

Making local calls while you are out of Kenora is easy. For example, you are in Calgary and wish to call a friend in Calgary to meet for dinner.

What You’ll Pay

Just your airtime rate for the airtime used. No long distance charges apply.

What to Do

  1. Dial the phone number you wish to call.
  2. Press [SND].

Making Long Distance calls while you’re out of Kenora

Making long distance calls when you’re out of Kenora works just the same as when you are back home. In this example, let’s say you are in Ottawa and wish to call a relative in Toronto.

What You’ll Pay

You will pay long distance charges from Ottawa to Toronto plus your airtime rate for the airtime used.

What to Do

  1. Dial 1 for long distance.
  2. Dial the area code and phone number you wish to call.
  3. Press [SND].

Receiving Calls and Automatic Call Delivery

With our Automatic Call Delivery service, all calls to your cellular number will automatically follow you across Canada. Your calling features can also be used while you’re travelling throughout Canada.

Automatic Call Delivery is provided to you at no cost. You will, however, pay long distance charges when you receive calls while you are outside KMTS Mobility’s home system. To reduce long distance charges, read on.

Note: If you wish to cancel the ACD, you must call KMTS Mobility Customer Service.

Receiving Calls From Home While Roaming

For example you are from Kenora, but are visiting Vancouver. To reach you, a caller from Kenora need only dial your 7 digit cellular number.

What You’ll Pay

You’ll pay long distance charges from Kenora to Vancouver, plus your airtime rate for the airtime used.

Receiving Local Calls While Roaming

Again, let’s say you’re visiting Vancouver. However, this time you receive a call from your brother who lives in Vancouver who dialed as follows: 1 + 807 + your cellular number.

What You’ll Pay

Your brother pays long distance charges from Vancouver to Kenora, while you pay long distance charges from Kenora to Vancouver, plus your airtime rate for the airtime used.

How to Use Roamer Access Numbers

What to Do

Have your brother dial as follows:

  1. Dial the Vancouver 7 digit Roamer Access Number.
  2. He will hear a second dial tone.
  3. Dial 807 and your cellular number.

Note: Your caller does not need to dial 1 + area code before the Roamer Access Number, because you are both in the same local calling area.

What You’ll Pay

In this case nobody pays long distance charges. You will pay your airtime rate for the airtime used while on the phone.

Using Roamer Access Numbers

A roamer Access number is a 10-digit number consisting of the (local area code) + 7-digit location specific access number. You will find Roamer Access Numbers for major cities and popular destinations within Canada and the U.S. in the MTS Mobility “North American Cellular Directory” or by calling [*]611 Customer Service. The procedure for using a Roamer Access Number is fairly easy, as shown below.

What to Do

  1. Leave the Roamer Access Phone Numbers of the places you will be visiting with the people who may need to contact you.
  2. Your caller dials 1 + 10-digit Roamer Access Phone Number of the area you are visiting.
  3. Your caller will hear a second dial tone.
  4. Your caller then dials 807 + your cellular phone number.

What You’ll Pay
Your caller will pay long distance charges from their location to the area you are travelling in. You will pay your airtime rate for the airtime used while on the call.
Note: Long distance charges will begin for your caller at the second dial tone, whether or not your cellular phone is answered.

Voice Mail Customers

If someone calls your cellular using the Roamer Access Number, and you are not able to answer the call, the Voice Mail System will not be able to take this call.

Roaming in the United States

Call Customer Service first if you plan on roaming in the U.S.

Making local calls while you’re in the U.S. works just the same as when you’re travelling in Canada. Most areas in the U.S. require 10-digit dialing (area code plus phone number) for local calls.

In some areas of the U.S., you do not always have to dial 1 before the area code and number to place a long distance call. This means that in some cases, you may think you are placing a local call that is actually long distance. Long distance charges will apply.

What to Do

Automatic Call Delivery in the U.S.

Calls to your cellular phone number will follow you into most American cities automatically. Just as in Canada, you can also use custom calling features such as Call Forward, Call Waiting and Conference Calling while travelling throughout most of the U.S.

To make sure this service is available, call 611 Customer Service before leaving to verify your destinations, or refer to the North American Cellular Directory.

What You’ll Pay
Receiving a call from Canada, or anywhere else in the U.S., will result in long distance charges from your home calling area to your current location plus applicable roaming airtime rates.

Follow-Me-Roaming in the U.S.

Automatic Call Delivery is not yet available in all U.S. destinations, but by activating Follow-Me-Roaming as shown below, your calls will get through.

What to do
1. Press *18.
2. Press [SND].

Approximately 20 minutes after you have completed this task, your phone will be set up. Callers simply dial your cellular phone number as they normally would to reach you.

Follow-Me-Roaming automatically deactivates at midnight MST. If you are using Follow-Me-Roaming, you must reactivate the feature each morning, and each time you enter another cellular network.

Note: If you are in a U.S. destination where FMR must be activated to have your calls follow you, your Voice Mail will not collect your messages. Your callers will hear a greeting advising them to call again, because you are not able to take their call.
