Community Involvement
KMTS Beach Volleyball Courts
When the last beach volleyball courts in town (formerly at the Log Cabin Tavern) closed down in the summer of 2007, I, as well as the volleyball community in Kenora was greatly disappointed. Graciously, the city of Kenora accepted my proposition to allow public beach volleyball courts to be put in a the Kenora Recreation Centre. As great a step as this was, without the money to physically build the courts, this was but a fleeting hope.
To the relief of every beach volleyball player in Kenora, KMTS quickly stepped up to the plate, taking on the financial burden, and much of the logistics of installing the courts.
By the end of June, 2008, the courts were fully operational and the KMTS Beach Volleyball League was bustling with teams of all levels of skill. The league has continued to grow seeing upwards of 30 teams sign up in the 2nd year of operation (2009). The league allows volleyball players to find exactly what they’re looking for – from the highly competitive players right through to those learning to play, there is a night for everyone.
Beach volleyball in Kenora has grown far beyond what it ever had in previous years, and it’s easy to see why! The conveniently located public courts allow players to come down for a game anytime, and the more structured leagues create a fun environment to play volleyball and meet lots of new people.
KMTS has continued to support the league, offering great prizes for top teams in each division. Furthermore, the availability of the volleyball courts has allowed for several competitive tournaments to be run (bringing teams in from Sioux Lookout, Dryden and Winnipeg) as well as instructional beach volleyball camps for kids.
The courts are still growing in popularity, and we encourage everyone to give beach volleyball a try – it’s a great way to spend some time outside, it’s healthy, and most of all, it’s a sport that’s fun at all levels of play!
