Community Involvement
KMTS Skateboard Park
The story of the KMTS Skatepark is a great community story.
The core group of young people with the aid of a few dedicated adults had been involved with various community events and activities for four years, from picking up garbage, packing hampers for the Salvation Army, volunteering for Communities-in-Bloom and conducting some small fundraisers to do three things:
- to improve the profile of skaters in the community
- to raise the profile of skating as an independent, unstructured recreational activity for anyone in the community
- to develop a concept for a skatepark and raise the $ to purchase the plan.
They had accomplished all three so a committee was formed to complete the build. KMTS agreed to purchase naming rights to the facility and other donors followed with contributions to the project.
If you have any concerns about the future of our world because of the attitudes of youth, go hang at the skatepark and observe. These young people are patient and supportive. They are tenacious…they try, try and they try again. They are better at democracy than adults are. There is a spirit of generosity, acceptance and common purpose that isn’t seen elsewhere.
The KMTS Skatepark is a world-class, community built facility. It is located in a place that screams to the youth of Kenora that we value their contribution to the life of our healthy community. It is a reward to them for their efforts in making this KMTS Skatepark a reality.
